Teaching English
A recognised qualification for language teachers
Who is this training for?
This course is designed for adults who
would like to acquire a formal qualification in the teaching of English as a
foreign language.
Potential candidates should have a good
level of general education, preferably a university degree, and
be mother-tongue or fluent English
speakers.
Qualifications
ASC-IH offers the following teacher training qualifications:
• English - IH-Cert TEFLA
Certificate Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults
IH has been at the forefront of teacher training for many years and was
instrumental in creating the RSA Certificate which was the predecessor of the
Cambridge CELTA. The IH certificate is based on a similar syllabus and gives
trainees a practical, hands-on introduction to the fundamental skills of
teaching English as a foreign language.

Course schedule
Aims of course:
To develop awareness of:
• Language: Linguistic form, function and
meaning
• Phonology
• Learners: different learning styles,
cultural influences, motivation
• Materials: Evaluation and selection of
published material, authentic material, games, visual materials, realia.
To give participants practical ability in:
• Classroom management
• Lesson planning
• Presentation and practice of new
language
• Developing the skills of reading,
listening, writing and speaking
• Error correction
• Teaching vocabulary
• Teaching pronunciation
Timetable
The course consists of 110 hours with
the teacher trainers and experienced teachers.
Candidates will also be required to spend considerable amounts of time
consolidating the content of the input sessions, preparing for their own
classes and observing experienced teachers giving classes at different levels.
Trainee teachers will have teaching practice at two levels and will also be
given access to school resources.
Standard Course
• Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 13h00-16h00
Next starting date: 25.01.2011
Assessment
Assessment is continuous
through observed teaching practice.
Trainees will also be required to submit three written assignments, and produce
their own file of visual materials.
Optional modules:
– Teaching business English
– Teaching one-to-one
– Teaching exam courses
The number of participants is limited
to 6 per group.

CHF 4'200.- (including material but excluding the purchase of key reference
books for private study)
A non-refundable deposit of CHF 500.- is required at the time of successful
enrolment.
