A-Levels

A clear path to university for International / Swiss teenagers and young adults

What is our A-Level programme?

Our A-Level programme is a 2-year, full-time course of study leading to university entrance.

It is open to students of all nationalities and educational backgrounds aged 16 and above.

University entrance requirements

In the European Union and in English speaking countries, 3 subjects are sufficient to meet the general entrance requirements of universities.

In Switzerland, some additional lower level qualifications are required.

A-Level students can therefore specialise in 3 main subjects, something which is far better suited to many students than the multiple subjects required to pass the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the Swiss Maturitι (Matu).

Timetable

Students have lessons up to a maximum of 5 days per week (1 day per subject) between the hours of 13h00 and 18h00.
The academic year lasts for 40 weeks beginning in August and finishing with final examinations in late May / early June.

Curriculum

The whole curriculum, including GCSE, "O" Levels, "AS" levels and A2, is taught in English.

Classes do not exceed 10 students (6 on average).

Subject options

For the year 2010/2011 subject options include:

French  • English  • History  • Biology  • Psychology
• Maths  •Economics and Business Studies • Other options subject to demand.

Not everyone may pass every subject first time. Unlike other programmes, students need only re-take the subjects they fail and there is no requirement to repeat a whole year.

Quality guaranteed

Geneva Secondary School / ASC International House is a fully approved A-Level examination centre thus ensuring that all courses and examinations take place in Geneva. Examinations and the curriculum are set by the EDEXCEL examination board in London.

The school also undergoes regular quality inspections from International House, the British Council and the A-Level examinations board.

English level

Given that all subjects are taught in English, a strong level of the language is required for all students.

Geneva Secondary School offers intensive English courses at all levels during the year. Students who need it can attend a preparatory course prior to starting the A-Level programme at ASC International House in the Rue de Lausanne.

Competitive fees

Students only pay for the services they use.

CHF 4’300 per subject plus CHF 500 annual enrolment and registration fee
